The Effectiveness of IIDs At Reducing DUI Recidivism

People convicted of driving under the influence face several penalties, including jail time, hefty fines, probation, and ignition interlock device installation.

So far, the latter has been proving to be quite effective at reducing DUI recidivism, with several studies supporting that claim.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mentions a survey of 15 completed studies of interlock effectiveness that found effectiveness rates of between 35 and 75 percent once an ignition interlock device was installed in a DUI offender’s car.

Those who participate in ignition interlock programs are also 15%–69% less likely to be arrested again for driving under the influence, according to another study.

For more scientific support of the effectiveness of ignition interlock devices, check out Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s compilation of multiple studies and surveys that attest to the effectiveness of ignition interlocks in reducing DUI recidivism.

The evidence in support of ignition interlock devices is overwhelming, to say the least. Of all the consequences of driving under the influence, installing an ignition interlock device is the one penalty that just might save the life of a DUI offender one day.

So, how does an ignition interlock device work? Check out the infographic below to find out.
