Drunk Driving: The Truths Behind the Myths

While no one sets out to maim or kill when they get behind the wheel intoxicated, that’s the problem with alcohol—it impairs the judgment. Add the many baseless misconceptions surrounding alcohol and DUI in the mix, and we have a distressing issue in our midst.

Myth 1 – “Accident”

One common (and unfortunate) myth about drunk driving is it is an accident. If truth be told, it is no accident. It’s a crash that could have been easily avoided. In a time where Lyft and Uber are just a finger swipe away, those who get behind the wheel intoxicated have no excuse.

Myth 2 – “College Kids”

It is also important to note that alcohol does not impair the judgment of young college-age kids alone. Case in point: in November 2006, a 48-year-old female struck 20-year-old Janakae Sargent.

The driver’s BAC was twice the legal limit and she ran a red light above 100 mph. Janakae, a Texas Tech University student, later died from her injuries. Janakae had nothing in her system, not even aspirin.

Myth 3 – “Cold Shower/Coffee”

Another long-held misconception about drunk driving is that a cold shower or a coffee cup can sober you up. Let’s set things straight: there is no magical shortcut to sobering up. You need to give the body enough time to metabolize the alcohol.

It takes at least 2 hours to metabolize 12 ounces of beer, 1.5 ounces of distilled spirit, and 4 ounces of wine. Until then, it’s safe to assume your brain stays under the influence.

Myth 4 – “It’ll pass”

If you think all you have to do is hire the best DUI attorney and your life is back to normal, think again. A DUI conviction has significant ramifications that can linger for years. Many are aware of the short-term consequences like fines and fees, high insurance premiums, and court-mandated community service, among others.

However, some of the long-term consequences of a DUI conviction can cause the greatest pain. Even after you’ve paid your dues, the conviction can still undermine many future opportunities and haunt you for life. A DUI conviction might also have a massive impact on your personal and professional relationships and your employment.

Conclusion

Besides knowing the long-term consequences of drunk driving, it is also crucial that you know the truths behind the most common DUI myths. The invaluable knowledge can go a long way towards ensuring you can protect yourself, family, and your future from DUI’s unfortunate consequences.
