Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center

About

Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center is also known as “CCB” or the Criminal Courts Building in Downtown Los Angeles. Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center is located at 210 West Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.   This courthouse is known in Los Angeles as the place where the most serious criminal matters are heard. Opened in 1972, it was originally known as the Criminal Courts Building.   In 2002 it was renamed the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, after Clara S. Foltz. While this courthouse does hear both misdemeanor and felony matters, this building is best known for the big hitters. The 9th floor is reserved for the most high profile cases of all and there is a second level of security to gain entrance to the 9th floor.

Parking

Traveling to CCB and locating parking is of course a challenge because this court is located in the center of Downtown Los Angeles. Traffic and parking are so challenging that it may be wise to consider arriving by bus or train.   Public transportation is generally very poor in Los Angeles but downtown LA is an exception with most services offering routes to downtown LA.

Additional Information

Many historic and notable criminal cases have been heard at CCB in Downtown LA. The infamous Judge Ito of the OJ Simpson murder trial still sits on the bench in CCB. Other high profile cases in recent years at CCB include the Phil Spector murder trial and the case of People v. Conrad Murray regarding the death of Michael Jackson. Murder trials and other serious and violent felonies are on trial in this courthouse daily, although most proceed with little media coverage or public interest.

Criminal cases in the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center are prosecuted by either the Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office or in some cases by local prosecutors such as the City Attorneys Office. With some limited exceptions the general pattern is that the more serious matters are handled by the District Attorneys office while misdemeanor and code violations are prosecuted by the various City Attorneys’ offices. Anyone facing a criminal charge in CCB or any other courthouse should consider consulting with an experienced Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney. In compliance with federal and state constitutional guarantees, anyone who is indigent and unable to afford the services of a private attorney can apply for court appointed counsel. These individuals will be appointed the services of the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office or in some circumstances the Alternate Defender or other court appointed lawyers. Court appointed counsel may still come with a price tag based the court’s findings determining your ability to pay for your legal defense.
